What Makes A Bookkeeper Affordable?

When you start a business, keeping costs low is vital in order to keep a good cashflow and make a profit at the end of your financial year.  A good bookkeeper should help you achieve this.

At ABS for example I work on the theory that my fees are taken out of what would normally be charged by an accountant at the end of a financial year.  By keeping your records up to date and ensuring that what gets sent to the accountant includes a variety of schedules and reconciliations, this should be achievable.

The accountant spends less time on the job so his costs are lower (he still makes a profit),  they are able to plan the workload better so there is a quicker turnaround.  Finally, your fee for their work should be less so you save money, especially given that the hourly rate for a CA or ACCA is more than what you’ll ever pay at ABS.

Worth considering………….

A New Twist To The Charity Fundraiser – Read On!!!

What Will I Wear?

Hi Everyone,

As you know I am entered into the 2011 Edinburgh Marathon and a raising funds for Epilepsy Scotland.

To make things a bit more interesting and in a bid to boost the fundraising aspect, I am issuing a challenge of sorts to everyone. I would like you all to make a bid / donation to my cause, and the highest bidder will get to choose what FANCY DRESS OUTFIT I RUN IN.

Now, some of you might be thinking that this is not much of an incentive, but when I tell you that there are no restrictions on the type of costume you choose, I can tell you are already more interested.

I will pick up the cost of buying the costume, none of the fund raised will be used for this.

There are however a few guidelines to follow:

  1. 1. All bids /donations for this challenge are separate to normal running donations.

2. In order to be included in the challenge you must make your bid at the Just Giving website (http://www.justgiving.com/Steve-McKenzie0) and make sure you leave a message stating you are bidding for this.

Finally, High Heels, Stilletoes and other dubious female footwear are exempt from all costumes (they never have anything I like in my size anyway).

So come on folks, dig deep and then get creative with what you would like to see a 42-year-old, karateka run 26 miles in!!

Cheers

Steve

Small Business Working Hours

We all know that to run your own business you need to put a lot of time and effort into it, but how do you get the right balance.

Some successful entrepreneurs will tell you that they sacrificed everything in order to get their business going and now they are reaping the benefits. That’s fine if you’re single, or married with no kids, but what if you already have a family, and a day job?

At the moment I run ABS in my spare time, and I use the word “spare” very sparingly. I am always conscious that i need to put the hours in for my work but also make sure i spend time with my family.

I’d be interested in other people’s views on this and any advice you might have to offer.

Cheers
